I am thrilled to announce that The Place Brand Observer has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council as member and media supporter.
As I wrote on LinkedIn in the context of overcrowding, we are facing a world where the competitiveness of destinations, cities, regions and countries more and more depends on their perceived sustainability, and how they perform on the social and environmental front (e.g. livability). Tourism as industry has long been a laggard, driven by short-term (seasonal) planning, strong lobbying, very few proactive industry leaders and the desire to take home financial benefits without much regard for the well-being of host communities and natural environments.
With sustainability now a mainstream concern and boardroom issue linked to health, quality and authenticity, travel and tourism managers, operators and decision makers are under considerable pressure to act.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council plays a key role as organization dedicated to establishing and managing global sustainability standards in tourism. At the heart of this work are the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s Destination Criteria (GSTC-D) and Hotel & Tour Operator Criteria (GSTC-H&TO).
