City Showcase:Tilburg

Welcome to Tilburg: The Netherlands' City of Makers

Tilburg, with its unique mentality, stands out as one of the most surprising cities in the Netherlands. As the country’s seventh largest city, Tilburg boasts a diverse atmosphere, shaped by its creative spirit and varied population. Known as a student city, it is home to a renowned university and several colleges, including the Rock Academy and schools focused on music and circus arts.

Creativity thrives in Tilburg, from its vibrant arts scene and top-tier museums to its renowned cultural venues. It is a true 'city of makers,' where residents, entrepreneurs, artists, and students alike are encouraged to shape their own futures.

Tilburg’s raw, down-to-earth character is evident in its constant evolution, driven by inner-city developments, community initiatives, and a dynamic art scene. This hidden gem, often flying under the radar, embraces an unconventional path—doing things its own way.

Discover Tilburg: A City of Innovation and Creativity

Tilburg does things its own way. Often regarded as a ‘hidden gem,’ the city is gaining recognition for its unique character. Once known as a modern industrial hub, thanks to its strategic location and excellent transport connections, Tilburg has since evolved into a city of social innovation. This transformation is driven by its creative education institutions, renowned university, and the enterprising spirit of its residents. Here, innovation thrives, especially when it serves human behavior and society, with a strong belief in learning by doing.

Tilburg is a diverse and ever-evolving city, offering a living environment that’s both dynamic and inviting. Its distinct neighborhoods each offer something special, encouraging visitors to explore and stay. Spoorzone Tilburg, the city center’s shopping district, and the redeveloped Piushaven waterfront are just a few examples. Piushaven, North Brabant's largest city harbor, invites visitors to stroll along the water, enjoy a meal at one of the many terraces, or even dine on a boat. Remarkably, this serene setting is just a short walk from the bustling city center.

The Museum Quarter, home to the Textile Museum and Museum De Pont, is another area undergoing transformation. Here, artists, makers, and creatives collaborate in studios and labs, with ample room for experimentation and growth.

A Fine Patchwork of Stories

Tilburg is a city woven from stories. Each resident and visitor has their own unique tale to tell. Located just five minutes from a renowned Safari Park and 15 minutes from De Efteling, one of the world's top theme parks, Tilburg also offers beautiful parks and nature reserves. Despite not having a historic city center, the city proves that it can still stand out by embracing experimentation and encouraging trial and error—making it an exciting place to live and visit.

In 2024, Tilburg was named 'Event City of the Year' thanks to its welcoming attitude toward new ideas and initiatives. Here, failure is seen as part of the process, allowing many groundbreaking projects to take root. One such example is the WOOHAH hip-hop festival, which began at Spoorzone Tilburg and has since grown into the internationally renowned Rolling Loud.

Tilburg blends culture, social innovation, talent, and creativity into a patchwork that ensures every visitor will find something to their liking.

Tilburg - event city of the year

Tilburg is a city with character. A city made big in the 19th century by the textile industry. Where once the skyline was dominated by churches and factories, now all kinds of iconic buildings have been added. Tilburg is a hands-on city, full of innovation and creativity, reinventing itself time and again. Perhaps not the prettiest girl in the class, but certainly the most exciting!

When I returned to my hometown in 2017 as mayor, I noticed an unprecedented pride the people of Tilburg have in their city. Pride in how we treat each other here: putting our noses to the grindstone and getting down to work. Pride also in how Tilburg has developed and continues to develop. Citymarketing Tilburg has contributed to this pride.

Tilburg Marketing: Showcasing a Unique Mentality

As the official place branding organisation, Tilburg Marketing plays a pivotal role in positioning the city both nationally and internationally. Since its establishment in 2015, the organisation has grown into a professional, dynamic team that shines a spotlight on the city and its surrounding villages every day. In the summer of 2024, Tilburg Marketing took a new step forward, launching a refreshed city brand, two new platforms, and a dedicated tourist information point.

Marc Meeuwis, Director of Tilburg Marketing, explains:

'Tilburg is diverse and versatile, which makes it easy for many people to feel at home here. But what truly defines Tilburg? We believe it’s the unique mentality of the city that makes it so attractive, bringing people together and connecting them. In Tilburg, you are free to be your authentic self. We are an inclusive city, and we naturally form connections with others. By working together, we achieve great things, turning small efforts into significant results. It feels like a village where everyone knows each other, yet constantly surprises with innovation. We are a city of makers—creating not only with our hands, but also with our knowledge and ideas. We transform the city with impactful concepts that address tomorrow's social challenges. In Tilburg, ordinary people achieve extraordinary things.'

DNA AS A BRAND

The Tilburg Marketing Foundation has played a crucial role in defining the city's identity, fostering local pride and recognition. Now well-established, the organisation was named the best city marketing team in the Netherlands for large municipalities, and Tilburg was awarded Events City of the Year.

Tilburg's brand is built on three core values: Social, Experimental, and Creative. These values guide the city's development, focusing on key themes such as talent retention, culture, sustainability, and innovation.

Through collaboration, Tilburg continues to evolve, with its community at the heart of the transformation.

A PATCHWORK OF STORIES

Tilburg is like a patchwork of stories—a vibrant mosaic of areas, people, events, and communities, all coming together to give the city its unique character. Stichting Marketing Tilburg captures this spirit with the motto: 'In Tilburg, we colour our own city.' The new brand campaign brings these diverse stories and perspectives together, celebrating the city's versatility.

As Marc Meeuwis puts it, 'Tilburg is a living canvas, constantly shaped by the dreams and stories of its people.'

A COMMUNITY OF AMBASSADORS

The Marketing Tilburg team positions the city as a place where every voice and story adds to a larger picture. The brand campaign showcases Tilburg through the stories of its residents. ‘We use social media,’ says Meeuwis, ‘but word of mouth is just as important.’

By involving locals as ambassadors, their stories spread the city’s message naturally, creating more fans and extending Tilburg’s reach across the Netherlands and beyond.

Word of mouth, responsible for 20-50% of purchases, is 10 times more effective than advertising, according to Jonah Berger. ‘That’s why we trust our fans as key to Tilburg’s branding,’ adds Meeuwis.

Moving Forward - Spoorzone and Spoorpark Developments

Tilburg is undergoing major transformations, attracting attention from other cities both in the Netherlands and abroad. One of the country's largest inner-city redevelopments took place here, with significant investments in the city centre shopping area. According to Marc Meeuwis, Tilburg’s mentality plays a key role in its success. Collaboration between the municipality, entrepreneurs, and other partners has built confidence in the future, ensuring that sustainable, innovative solutions are always at the forefront.

Two examples of the boldness of government, entrepreneurs and residents are the Spoorzone Tilburg area development and the largest citizen initiative in the Benelux, the Spoorpark.

SPOORZONE: AREA OF INNOVATION AND TALENT

One of the best-known redeveloped areas is Spoorzone Tilburg. From 1920, this site was dedicated to train and locomotive repairs, and only workers had access. In 2010, the municipality bought the land from Dutch Railways, giving entrepreneurs the opportunity to turn it into a creative hub. Today, it’s a thriving hotspot where historical buildings have been repurposed, with the Lochal as the standout. This impressive steel-and-glass structure, home to the local library, was named best building in the world in 2019.

Spoorzone Tilburg is also a centre for innovation and talent. Organisations like Midpoint Brabant and MindLabs support entrepreneurial talent, education, and partnerships. Tilburg University now offers an entrepreneurship course in the area, and startups and scale-ups thrive in its collective spaces.

SPOORPARK: CENTRAL PARK IN TILBURG

The Spoorpark area was once an abandoned logistics site between the railway station and Tilburg University. Now, this 7.5-hectare park is one of the largest citizens' initiatives in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Born from a competition organised by the municipality, the winning design came from residents who envisioned a space for greenery, sports, relaxation, and cultural activities.

With collaboration between the city, residents, entrepreneurs, and organisations, Spoorpark has become a popular meeting place, shaped by the people of Tilburg.
