The Global Financial Centres Index 35 ranks Istanbul 110th, showing no change from the previous ranking. However, in Fintech, the city ranks 74th, having dropped seven places.

In the Innovation Cities Index 2022-2023, it is ranked 53rd, a decline of 21 positions. This might indicate a need for renewed focus on innovation-driven growth.


City Brand Strength and Reputation

According to Brand Finance’s City Index 2023, Istanbul ranks 64th.

The 2024 World’s Best Cities Report by Resonance ranks Istanbul 19th overall, with strong performances in Liveability (8th) and Lovability (8th), but lower in Prosperity (181st).

In the Global Cities Index 2023, the city ranks 25th, up three positions, though its Global Cities Outlook ranking decreased slightly to 118th.

The Global Power City Index 2023 places it 30th, with particularly high marks in Cultural Interaction (6th) and Accessibility (12th).


How Attractive for Talent, Visitors, Locals?

The Mercer Quality of Living City Ranking ranks Istanbul 137th, reflecting challenges in living conditions. The Mercer Cost of Living Ranking places the city at 185th, up by 37 positions, indicating a relative increase in living costs.

In the Numbeo City Quality of Living Index, it ranks 158th, while it is 208th in the Cost of Living Index.

In 2024, the Times Higher Education ranking ranks Istanbul Technical University in the 501-600 bracket and 34th in the Impact Ranking. Meanwhile, the QS World University ranking positions Istanbul Technical University 326th overall.


Urban Sustainability

The city ranks 74th in the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index, performing moderately in Planet (55th) and People (74th), with particular room for improvement in Profit (79th).

In the IESE Cities in Motion Index 2024, it ranks 93rd overall, with notable strengths in International Profile (5th) – followed by Technology (46th). Challenges remain in Social Cohesion (145th) and Environment (128th).
