Sustainability Leaders United

A Decade of Leadership Conversations on Sustainability and the visitor economy

For over twelve years, Sustainability Leaders United (SLU) brought together leading voices from destinations, public institutions, academia, and industry to explore how sustainability leadership shapes places and communities.

Founded as an independent initiative and later integrated into The Place Brand Observer, SLU created a platform for dialogue on regenerative tourism, ESG strategy, community wellbeing, and long-term resilience.

In 2025, the initiative concluded as a standalone project. Its mission continues within the broader editorial vision of PlaceBrandObserver.com, where sustainability remains central to how places build reputation, competitiveness, and long-term value.

Reference for Leadership in Sustainable Tourism

Sustainability Leaders United (Sustainability-Leaders.com) focused not on abstract ambition, but on implementation — how sustainability is embedded into governance, policy, tourism development, and place management.

Developed by Florian Kaefer, founder and editor-in-chief of The Place Brand Observer, the initiative was informed by his academic background in sustainable development and tourism, and a sustained interest in innovation, leadership, and transformative change.

Over more than a decade, the initiative:

  • Published in-depth interviews with destination leaders and sustainability pioneers
  • Documented case studies from cities, regions, and countries worldwide
  • Explored the intersection of social, economic and environmental sustainability
  • Produced a handbook, special reports and a yearbook dedicated to regenerative tourism and leadership

The platform became a trusted reference point for decision-makers seeking practical insight and peer exchange.

From Dedicated Initiative to Integrated Perspective

As PlaceBrandObserver has evolved, sustainability has become inseparable from conversations on place reputation, investment attraction, tourism strategy, and long-term competitiveness.

Rather than maintaining a separate platform, the decision was made to integrate Sustainability Leaders United into the wider editorial framework of The Place Brand Observer. This ensures that sustainability leadership remains embedded — not siloed — within the broader discourse on how places position themselves in a rapidly changing world.
